The magazine The Economist devotes its cover of 1 June to the European elections, with the headline ‘The three women who will shape Europe.’ Ursula von der Leyen seeks a new term as President of the European Commission, with the predictable support of conservatives, social democrats, and liberals. But the fragmentation of the chamber stokes up fear that for the first time, these three groups will not muster a majority, in which case the candidate would need the backing of Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, with whom, as she has stated, she has been “working very well.” An alliance of this nature would mean a distancing of Fratelli d’Italia, Meloni’s party, from Le Pen’s Rassemblement national, but an eventual agreement among sectors of the radical right cannot be ruled out. Whatever happens, the future of Europe will be in the hands of three women: a German, an Italian, and a Frenchwoman.
