A volcano in Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula erupted on Saturday, the country’s meteorological office said. Videos posted on social media showed bright orange lava spewing in the region. This is the fourth eruption in the Nordic island nation since December. The Met Office (IMO) said that a ‘volcanic eruption has started between stora Skogfell and Hagafell on the Reykjanes Peninsula’.

A volcano in Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula erupted on Saturday, the country’s meteorological office said. Videos posted on social media showed bright orange lava spewing in the region. This is the fourth eruption in the Nordic island nation since December. The Met Office (IMO) said that a ‘volcanic eruption has started between stora Skogfell and Hagafell on the Reykjanes Peninsula’.
“Increased seismic activity between Hagafell and Stóra-Scógfell, the seismic activity together with land changes could indicate that a magma flow is starting and there is now an increased chance of a volcanic eruption,” the IMO had warned a minute before the eruption on Saturday. The eruption started between Hagafell and Stóra Skógfell at 08:23 PM local time after short-term seismic activity.

A volcano last erupted in the region in early February. Lava flows destroyed roads, pipelines and several houses. Soon after Saturday’s eruption, Víðir Reynisson, director of the National Defense Department, said that the evacuation of the Blue Lagoon is complete.
The communications director of Almannavarna said that evacuation is underway in Grindavík. He added that the eruption does not pose any threat to residents.
Iceland currently has more than30 active volcanoes. Ash clouds from eruptions in 2010 had affected several parts of Europe, grounding as many as 100,000 flights.
A natural hazard expert with the IMO said that that the Saturday eruption is similar to the one in February. “This is between Stóra-Skógfell and Sýlingarfell on the Sundhnúksgiga series. Most earthquakes are in that area.”
The expert added that earthquake activity started in the area at around 7 PM local time. “It was going very fast before this happened, the eruption started around 20:20, but we don’t really have the exact timing of it yet.”
