Swedish conservative leader Ulf Kristersson announced this Friday an agreement to govern with Christian Democrats and liberals in Sweden with the external support of the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD), which will guarantee it a majority in Parliament.
Kristersson must undergo a vote in Parliament this Monday to be elected prime minister, reported its president, Andreas Norlén.
The right-wing bloc won the legislative elections on September 11 and obtained 176 seats compared to 173 for the center-left of the social democratic prime minister, Magdalena Andersson, whose party nevertheless maintained the status of the most voted force with 30,3%, ahead of the SD (20,5%) and the conservatives (19,1%).
«We received a mandate from the Swedish people on election day, we took it with the utmost seriousness. Change is not only necessary, it is also possible, and the four parties can offer that change,” Kristersson said at a press conference.
The leader of the SD, Jimmie Åkesson, acknowledged in the same appearance that his party would have preferred a majority Executive to have been part of, but stressed that it has obtained “significant” political influence in the agreement and that “it is as if we were in the Government”.
For example, he mentioned that Immigration policy and criteria for acquiring Swedish nationality will be tightened, as well as measures in the fight against crime carried out by criminal gangs, such as doubling penalties or allowing anonymous witnesses, and that a national ban on begging will be studied.
“Asylum rules in Sweden should not be more generous than what community law requires us to do,” Åkesson stated.
The SD leader spoke of a “paradigm change”, which would also be reflected in the reduction of the quota of admitted refugees through United Nations programs, which will go from 6.400 to 900 per year.
The pact also includes a reduction in development aid and a boost to nuclear energy, as the right-wing bloc had already defended in the campaign, for which 400.000 billion Swedish crowns (about 37.000 billion euros) will be allocated to construction. of new reactors.
The conservative leader received the official task of directing the negotiations on the 19th after Norlén met with all the political leaders and a majority gave him their support.
The SD, with neo-Nazi roots at its founding in the late 1980s, was subjected to a “cordon sanitaire” by the rest of the forces since its entry into Parliament in 2010., which explains why the Social Democrats have governed as a minority in the last two legislatures despite the fact that there was a center-right majority in the Chamber.
Conservatives, Christian Democrats and liberals, however, opened up last year to breaking that isolation and reaching an agreement with the SD., although they rejected his entry into an executive.
«I see great risks for our country. The right-wing agreement is going to increase the cracks and division. “Economic policy can make Swedes poorer by increasing inflation and mortgages, while causing cuts in health, education and aged care.”said Andersson, acting prime minister.
The social democratic leader pointed out that although Kristersson is going to appear as prime minister, the person who will exercise real command will be Åkesson, which will make the SD “responsible” for the Executive’s policy.
