While the aircraft may not be physically in Malta, they will be added to Malta’s Aviation Register. Malta is proving to be an attractive place for airlines to register aircraft, and the island’s government wants to see more make the switch and join Wizz Air and Eurowings Europe. Malta’s Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Minister, Aaron Farrugia, said the government wants this industry to make a substantial contribution to the country’s economy. He believes there will be around 800 aircraft on Malta’s registry next year and said the government would ensure there are enough trained personnel to meet the sector’s needs.

Apart from any possible government incentives to set up shop in Malta, Beveridge said the move would reduce complexity for Eurowings staff at the various bases. When the move was announced in February, Eurowings told the Malta Independent the aim “is to eliminate the complexity for employees within Europe, which is driven by the current double taxation, and to enable further growth.” It added that the move was made independently of the Eurowings flight program and that ” there are no plans on starting or increasing flights from Malta.”

Without delving into pan-European tax law, Eurowings said that regardless of where its crews were based, most of the wage taxation falls to the country where the airline is legally domiciled, Austria. It adds that “a legal domicile in Malta makes it possible for the tax and social security contributions of employees to be paid in full in the respective country of employment, i.e., Spain, the Czech Republic, Sweden, etc.” All of which is good news for the 700 or so staff that Eurowings Europe Limited will soon employ.

As for the paying passengers, there is probably not much to see here. What do you guys think about Eurowings Europe hanging up its shingle in Malta instead of Austria?
