The Grand Duchy lags only behind Malta, Cyprus, and Greece.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn took stock of Luxembourg’s asylum policies at a press conference this Monday morning. 4,047 individuals applied for international protection – the number is decreasing compared to previous years.
A quarter of all asylum seekers are from Eritrea. Syrians represented the second highest percentage of asylum seekers. A total of 653 people successfully obtained refugee status in Luxembourg. Most of them are Syrians.
88 applications were rejected either because the country of origin was not considered dangerous or because the initial application was not made in Luxembourg. A total of 207 individuals were denied international protection status under the normal procedure. 100 were refused under accelerated procedure and 90 under fast-track procedure.
There were 79 forced returns in 2018 and 131 in 2019. 36 unaccompanied minors applied for international protection in 2019. 64 applicants had stated they were minors even though they were 18 or older.
