Vinterstudion was one of the most-watched TV events in Sweden in the 21st century. Five world championships over four weeks were intertwined into a total of 150 hours of live sports television, securing SVT Sport’s place on the ‘Outstanding Production Achievement – Event’ shortlist at SVG Europe’s prestigious Sports TV Awards 2021.

Broadcasting 9 hours of live coverage every weekday on Sweden’s largest TV channel and streaming service, SVT Sport made use of a number of technical innovations to give viewers a sporty, nerve-wracking experience, far from the thought of the pandemic. AR graphics gave a sense of closeness to the athletes and through the introduction of a “tech corner”, viewers learned about the behind-the-scenes techniques used for winter sporting events, such as how snow is prepared with salt and how an airbag vest can save lives in downhill skiing.

Likewise, remote video links made it possible for international sports stars and coaches to participate in live interviews. Drawing on SVT Sport’s status as a leader in gender-balanced sports coverage, Vinterstudion was no exception. They maintained equal on-screen representation across all hosts, experts, and commentators used throughout the four-week-long broadcast, capturing unforgettable moments and memories.

The winners of the SVG Europe Sports TV Awards 2021, sponsored by Canon, will be announced on Thursday 28 October at Chelsea F.C. during the Sport Production & Technology Summit 2021. Registration for both events is now open to members and sponsors here.
