Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Nio announced on Monday the opening of a new battery swap station in Germany, marking its 16th station in the country and 44th in Europe.

In mid-June, the company’s Head of Nio Power, Kajsa Sognefur, unveiled that the EV maker will launch its upgradeable battery feature in Norway “this summer”, with plans to extend the service to the other four European markets at a later stage.

The new feature will allow users to upgrade or downgrade their batteries (between the 75kWh and the 100kWh batteries) based on their needs, similar to the flexibility offered in China under Nio’s Battery as a Service (BaaS) program.

Over the last months, the company has been welcoming battery swap partners in China including Changan Automobile, Geely Holding Group, Chery, and its former manufacturing partner Jianghuai Automobile Group (JAC).

Additionally, Nio announced in late April that has partnered with Lotus to co-develop charging and battery swap technologies.

This means that the PSS in Berlin is the 16th Power Swap Station in Germany that goes into operation today, which is available to our users for quick and uncomplicated battery replacement,” the company wrote on LinkedIn.
