SPANGDAHLEM, GERMANY – AUGUST 03: The entrance of the U.S. Air Force Spangdahlem Air Base is seen on August 03, 2020 in Spangdahlem, Germany. U.S. Defense Department officials recently announced that Spangdahlem Air Base’s F-16 squadron, the base’s only flying unit, would move to Italy as part of a reduction in US forces in Germany. Base officials said it is not projected to close, and no timeline has been given, but regional German leaders have expressed concern over the economic impact of the withdrawal. (NewsNation) — U.S. military facilities in much of Europe are on alert for a possible terrorist attack, according to a statement from the U.S. European Command headquarters.
The command told personnel in Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy and elsewhere that condition “Charlie” is in effect.
The Charlie threat level “applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities is likely,” according to the Army’s website.

“USEUCOM advises personnel in the European theater to remain vigilant and stay alert at all times,” the command said in a statement. “USEUCOM constantly monitors the security environment to ensure its personnel are informed and best postured to assure the safety of their individual person, family and loved ones.”
The statement did not point to any specific threat, but it comes on the heels of increased alarm about terrorism threats following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
The alert directs U.S. military service members and staffers to be extra vigilant and to expect significant delays at base entry points.
“Charlie” is the second-highest state of alert. The force protection levels are Normal, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie or Delta, the highest state of alert.
“Charlie” comes with several changes in a base’s everyday operations, including a suspension of “nonessential” activities and personnel such as barbershops and some food services. Many others will work from home, according to the statement.
