Nordic Food Labs Anty Gin

Nordic Food Labs Anty Gin

Cambridge Distillery

If you like to eat bugs but could do without that whole “I’m eating a bug” thing, maybe this new flavored gin from Nordic Food Lab is for you. Called ‘Anty Gin,’ the latest from the Copenhagen-based non-profit is a—you guessed it—gin infused with distilled ants.

Before you start gagging, and petitioning your local liquor store not to carry bug-flavored alcohol, hear this: only 99 bottles of limited edition Anty Gin have been made for sale (so far), and they won’t be sold in the U.S. Also, you’ll need about $315 to spare if you want to get your hands, and tastebuds, on this stuff.

The fancy new flavor, a collaboration with the UK’s Cambridge Distillery, is said to have a “citrusy” taste. Forbes also reports that there are “notes of juniper berries and nettles.” That’s all thanks to “the essence of approximately 62 wood ants,” that go into the making of every bottle. Yum.

Sadly, these ants are dying for the greater good of our alcohol, but *supposedly* they’re going out with a pleasant disposition. According to a comment on Instagram, the ants selected by the makers of Anty Gin, “have to be ‘happy ants’ because when the insects are angry they release their formic acid which is essential to produce the gin.” We’re not really sure what all of that means, but we’re hoping it translates to a humane method of putting these bugs to rest.

R.I.P.
