This New Beer Is Made With Mace, Yes… MACE

To brew their newest beer, the good people at Dogfish Head had to wear full body suits and face masks. Respirators, too. Why the heavy-duty gear? Because their new small batch brew is made with Mace. As in, the stinging pepper spray packed by riot police and women walking home alone at night. The beer is called In Your Mace!, and it sounds intense.

In Your Mace! came to be because Dogfish Head’s founder Sam Calagione went to high school with the Eric Crawford, the VP of sales at Mace Security International, Inc. Together, they experimented with two kinds of mace — one being the spice (a nutmeg shell) and the other being the natural pepper oil found in actual Mace pepper spray.

The result is a coffee milk stout brewed with chili oils, the active ingredient in Mace, for “spicy nutmeg, anise and espresso aromas with a palate-warming chili spiced finish.” It won’t burn your tongue and throat, Dogfish Head promises, but it’s definitely got some heat.

The brewery is serving In Your Mace! at Boston’s Extreme Beer Fest and on tap today at its Milton, Delaware, tasting room. It’s also selling a limited number of bottles, first come first
