New IKEA Placemats Feature Cell Phone Pocket

Most of us always have our cell phones within arm’s reach, whether we’re at work, watching TV or Instagramming dinner (guilty). It’s become so ubiquitous, in fact, that IKEA has staged a mini-intervention, of sorts, with its latest line of tableware: Place settings with a pocket on the side to store your cell phone.

Yes, really. Just take a look:

While at first glance, it may seem that having the phone right next to your knife and fork will make it easier to sneak a peek—after all, you can see your screen light up through the fabric when you get a new text, email or call—but that’s the opposite of the designers’ intention. The goal, the company says, is to give people a place to tuck away their phones and ignore them for a meal, while also keeping them crumb-free.

If friends’ and family’s constant texting at the table is driving you insane, you could slide your phone into the pocket screen-side down, so you can’t tell when someone likes that photo you just posted of the kebabs you’re having for dinner. Or you could forego the placemats and institute a no-phones-at-the-table rule, or create a designated place to stow phones, like this restaurant did.

The placemats—as well as the other items in IKEA’s limited-edition Sittning line, which includes rustic gray serving bowls with matte finishes and dark wood serving platters—will be available in stores in September.
