Vending machines are notorious diet-killers, usually filled with candy bars, soda, and cookies packed tight in neat rows. But if you’ve ever traveled to Chicago, you might beg to differ. At around 75 different spots throughout the city, you’ll run into a Farmer’s Fridge. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: an insulated vending machine that’s stocked with fruit and veggie-filled meals.
CEO Luke Saunders is slowly expanding the company’s reach, with fridges coming to Milwaukee this year. He’s got eyes on other Midwest markets, too, but the whole shtick screams California. Each machine is stocked daily, and the selections look like they were pulled straight from a Pinterest board. In the morning, there’s yogurt and granola, overnight oats, and chia pudding. Later, those are switched out to salads (packed in mason jar-like containers) and grain and pasta bowls.
The snacks are the real game-changers, though. Instead of chips, you can grab filling little jars of chicken, tofu, or hardboiled eggs. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth: chocolate trail mix. Because, baby steps.
