The presence of dangerous fungicide in some of our morning OJ has caused the FDA to ban all imports of foreign orange juice. Studies show Carbendazim, which is used in countries like Brazil to kill black fungus that grows on citrus, increases incidence of cancer and infertility. The tip-off to the FDA came from the Coca-Cola Company after they found the fungicide during routine testing back in December.
But before you pour out all your cartons, the government believes the amount of Carbendazim is too low to cause any real harm. However, the FDA is still stopping any more juice from entering the country’s supply and will be taking measures to determine if products currently in supermarkets contain unsafe levels of the chemical.
