Margot Robbie Used Beer To Give Her Hair More Volume In 'I, Tonya'

In the early aughts, mayonnaise was the kitchen-cabinet hair mask du jour. You could hate it on a sandwich, but on dry locks — oooh, that conditioning was undeniable. Avocados and coconut milk have been used over the years, too — even Diet Coke’s benefits have been touted — so we shouldn’t have been surprised to learn what pantry staple gave Margot Robbie her signature I, Tonya look.

“To set the hair, we didn’t use setting lotions or mousse — we used beer — as crazy as that sounds,” Robbie’s on-set stylist Adruitha Lee told Refinery29. Robbie wore wigs during the bulk of filming, so those faux styles were the ones getting doused with booze. Lee would perm and color them, but to give the curly bangs some ’80s volume, she poured beer on them and let them dry naturally.

Lee’s not the first person to turn to the bottle for beauty help. Beer contains silica, a compound that’s commonly added to hair gel. It can increase friction between hair fibers, causing your ‘do to grow in volume. It’s an interesting hack, but Robbie’s I, Tonya hair wasn’t exactly enviable. So for now, we’ll stick to drinking beer and let its beauty benefits stay on the silver screen.
