A Week Before The Paris Games’ Opening, France Recalls Olympic-Branded Water Bottles For Children Over Contamination

Paris: The authorities in France have recalled an Olympic-branded water bottle for children containing excessive levels of endocrine disruptor – a chemical named Bisphenol A. The bottles were recalled a week before the opening of the Paris Games.

The reusable bottles were made by the Vilac company. According to the government website Rappel Conso (Consumer Recall), the bottles have “levels of Bisphenol A not in line with regulations” on products designed to be in contact with food.

The bottles are white coloured flasks with beige, blue or red tops. They are branded with Olympic rings, the Paris 2024 mascot or the Olympic flame, according to the report by AFP.

Authorities asked the people who have bought them to return them to the place of purchase, the report said.

The bottles were sold in France from late August 2023 until the beginning of June this year.

What Is Problem With Bisphenol A (BPA)?

Bisphenol A was once widely used in making food containers. The chemical has been banned in France since 2015.

France’s food agency Anses has termed the chemical as an endocrine disruptor. As per AFP, the chemical is believed to be linked to various health problems including breast cancer and infertility.

According to the Breastcancer.org website, research and studies looking into chemicals in food and beverage containers strongly suggest that “at certain exposure levels, some of the chemicals in these products, such as bisphenol A (BPA), may cause cancer in people.”
