The two-wheeler market in Italy is experiencing significant momentum, with sales steadily increasing over the years despite a slight setback reported in 2020. The momentum has continued into 2024, following the strong +15.9% jump reported in the previous year, when the market hit the highest level out of the last 15 years.

Sales have continued to rise sharply, starting with a positive first quarter (+2.7%). Although negative y.o.y. performance both in May and June, the first half sales have been 213.143 (+5.3%).

Despite the positive overall sales trend in the Italian two-wheeler market, the electric segment notably plummed, with a 26.3 decline to be added at the previous year -27.3%.

Looking at the manufacturer’s performance so far this year, Honda (-0.3%), Piaggio (-2.1%) and Yamaha (+11.8%) confirm their place on the podium.

The raising stars are Voge (+97.7%), Zontes (+64.5%), Kawasaki (+35.5%), Kymco (+19.3%), Suzuki (+16.6%), QJ Motor (+9072%) and MBP (+230%).

Italian Motorcycles Market In 2023

In recent years, the Italian two-wheeler market has emerged as an ideal entry point for “newcomers” seeking to establish a foothold in Europe. Several new brands such as Royal Enfield, CF Moto, Voge, and others, along with revitalized brands like Benelli and Moto Morini, have launched operations in Europe, focusing on maximizing performance in Italy before expanding into other markets. Overall, these efforts have been successful, sustaining market growth even during periods of supply chain challenges, such as those experienced in 2022 by traditional manufacturers.

In 2023 all the conditions were perfect, with Japanese manufacturers (particularly Honda) being able to produce at full capacity, while newcomers continued to thrive. As a results, the market was the largest in Western Europe, with 338,241 registrations (+16,1%), the 3rd growth in a row and the highest level since 2007.

The growth in the Italian two-wheeler market was driven primarily by the scooter segment, which saw a notable increase of 17.1%. Within this segment, high-displacement scooters (501-750cc) more than doubled their sales. Meanwhile, the motorcycles segment also experienced rapid growth, rising by 15.0%. Particularly strong performances were observed in the 751-1000cc class (+39.7%) and the 501-750cc class (+32.6%).

The electric vehicle (EV) segment was the only area to show negative figures, declining by 27.3%. Specifically, the L1 segment saw a decrease of 44.3%, while L3 declined by 10.7%.

Turning to the performance of top manufacturers, Honda maintained its lead with first-half sales surging by 53.9%, driven by the resolution of supply chain issues and robust demand for models like X-ADV 750, SH350, and SH150.

In second place, Piaggio is fast growing as well with growth of +12.0%, while Yamaha secured third place, increasing by sales by +12.4%.

In fourth place, Kymco increased sales by 1.1%, followed by SYM (+15.8%), while BMW is up 1.7%, Benelli is down 9.4% and Ducati is also down 2.3%.
