Europe is grappling with the prospect of Donald Trump’s potential return to the US presidency, while pinning its hopes on current Vice President Kamala Harris, who overnight appears to have clinched enough delegates to win her party’s nomination. According to EU officials, European governments are quietly looking to cultivate relations with Republicans to ensure they have a line in to a potential Trump White House. All the while, it is Harris’ vision for US foreign policy and security that many European nations find appealing. Harris has previously argued for the importance of US engagement in global affairs, contrasting that with Trump’s isolationism. Another plus for Europe is Harris’ national security adviser Philip Gordon, who has a deep understanding of Europe and its security needs.
