Americans waste a whole lot of food — $165 billion worth per year, to be exact. But thanks to an app currently in the works called PareUP, restaurants and grocery stores may be able to cut back on tossing out perfectly good food.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the app will help pair customers and retailers so that the eateries and markets can sell their leftovers at a discounted price. “Food ranges from really fresh to new to absolutely disgusting. But we’re only using a small window of that range, and we’re throwing out a lot more than needs to be,” explained app co-founder Margaret Tung.
While PareUp isn’t quite ready to launch yet, the New York-based startup plans to have it ready for Apple users in the fall.

7-second life story: I was pre-med in college, until I realized that I could turn baking my problems away (instead of doing my chem homework) into a profession.
Hometown: Los Angeles
3 things I make better than anyone else: Pancakes (they are a Sunday morning staple for the Bain family), cookie dough (I will take the raw stuff over just-out-of-the-oven cookies any day), chili
Recipe I’m on the eternal hunt for: The easiest-ever, throw-together soup that I still have time to make after work
Kitchen technique I just can’t get right: Poaching eggs. I swirl the water, just like everyone says I should, but it never works. #fail
