What’s to be done about Germany’s inability to pull itself out of its economic mire? Europe’s largest economy has been flatlining at best for much of the past two years and, with industrial orders still declining, there’s little evidence of a recovery. It’s particularly dispiriting that German business confidence is deteriorating, with the July IFO Institute expectation’s barometer dropping closer to the lows seen during lockdown. Its weakness presents a genuine dilemma for the European Central Bank.
France’s economy is also struggling with its manufacturing purchasing managers’ surveys also deeply in the contraction zone at 44.1 for July. Meantime, the southern economies of Spain, Portugal and Greece are displaying promising signs of growth.
