Britons going on holiday abroad should always consult the UK Government’s up-to-date advice for their chosen destination.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) recently issued a travel warning for Romania.

Holidaymakers were warned: “There is widespread military activity in neighbouring Ukraine.

“Public demonstrations are common. Marches and gatherings are mostly peaceful and well-policed but take extra care in crowded places.

“Demonstrations, marches and gatherings can attract violence. Monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.”

Holidaymakers were advised to see Ukraine travel advice. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the western regions ofZakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr

FCDO advises against all travel towithin 50km of the borders of Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr with Belarus, due to the ongoing presence of Russian and Belarusian military and security personnel on the Belarusian side of the border, and the rest of Ukraine.

Romania is typically safe for tourists, with holidaymakers flocking to experience its beautiful architecture, paradisical nature and diverse experiences – from traditional villages to vibrant nightlife.

However, no travel can be guaranteed safe and tourists should always be aware of potential issues whenever they go abroad.

The FCDO shared essential information about the threat of terror in Romania. Holidaymakers were advised: “There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

“UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.” The FCDO also has guidance on how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad.

The FCDO continued: “Terrorist attacks in Romania cannot be ruled out. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals.”

As for crime, holidaymakers were warned to “be alert to petty theft in large towns, especially Bucharest”.

“Thieves use distraction techniques and can carry out organised attacks in groups. Take care of your passport, money and personal belongings, particularly near money exchanges and hotels, on public transport – especially to the airport – in main railway stations and inside airport terminals.
