This month, Latvian State Police, in cooperation with foreign colleagues, Spanish National Police included, caught one of the most notorious crime lords in Latvia, as well as members of his criminal group, as reported by State Police.
The man in question was detained on the 10th of September in a special international police operation in cooperation with Europol and Eurojust.
Police say he is suspected of running a criminal network that also includes international drug trafficking and large-scale money laundering. This person was known for his luxurious lifestyle and frequent trips abroad, even though he had no legal source of income.
To avoid being detained, he travelled in a specially equipped vehicle with three armed bodyguards on a daily basis,
demonstrating the high security options available to him, law enforcement officials have revealed.
At the same time, conducting coordinated detention and searches during a joint operation in Riga, the police, in cooperation with the counter-terrorism unit “Omega”, as well as involving employees of the K-9 Division of the State Revenue Service, detained nine more members of the same organized criminal group.
In turn, with the support of the Spanish National Police, six more persons were detained in Loretta de Mar and Valencia, Spain. Three of the suspects have been detained in Spain on the basis of European Arrest Warrants issued by Latvia.
The search seized more than EUR 110 000 in cash, two firearms, 95 ammunition cartridges, four “airsoft” hand grenades, two armoured vests, 13 kg of marijuana, forged IDs, four vehicles, cryptocurrency wallets, luxury watches, as well as decisions on seizure of property – ten real estate properties with a total value of about EUR 500 000.
This was one of the priority investigations of the State Police and Europol. With close cooperation of all authorities, the necessary information was obtained to identify the activities of this organized criminal group, State Police stress.
During the joint operation, three Latvian officials participated in the activities carried out in Spain, while in Latvia there was also a Europol expert.
Europol also provided technical and forensic support, helping to obtain and analyse evidence that will be essential for further investigation. In turn, judicial cooperation between Latvia and Spain was coordinated by Eurojust.
