Europe’s largest travel group has hailed a ‘promising start’ to its winter holiday season as more customers fly in off-peak months.

Tui said it has seen a growing number of holidaymakers travel during ‘shoulder months’ including September and November.

These are traditionally less popular but can help tourists dodge the extreme heat of the high summer and overcrowding during school holidays.

Egypt, Cape Verde, Thailand and Mexico are the popular winter getaways, a Tui spokesman said.

The German company also revealed annual profits are set to rise by ‘at least’ a quarter thanks to booming demand. The group has recently hiked prices as it tries to grapple with higher costs.

Summer getaways were 3 per cent more expensive this year than last and are up 5 per cent so far for winter.

Tui said its summer bookings were up 6 per cent on last year, reaching 14.7m. Winter bookings are up 7 per cent so far.
