Malmo manager more than happy to remind Rangers of previous European defeats to the Swedes… and insists ‘it will probably happen again’

Malmo boss Henrik Rydstrom has applauded the club’s cheeky social media jibe at Rangers – and is confident of victory in Thursday night’s Europa League clash in Sweden.

A video was posted on Malmo’s official club account earlier this week which poked fun at the Scots’ previous losses against the Swedes back in 2011 and 2021.

The video referenced the fact that Rangers then plummeted down the divisions after suffering a financial collapse just a few months after that meeting in 2011.

It prompted some angry responses from Rangers supporters on social media, but Rydstrom claims there was no malice intended.

Asked about the video, he said: ‘I’m really sure it was a bit fun and I think the response is also with that spirit.

Rangers had a bad night back in 2011 as Malmo knocked them out and Steven Whittaker was sent off in a Champions League qualifier

‘And that’s my experience with the Scottish supporters. A lot of passion, a lot of joy you can say. But also a fun part.

‘I don’t see any problem with it. I think it’s really nice. Do you think it reflects somehow what the game is going to be like? I think the game is going to be intense and it’s going to be a really tough game.

‘I haven’t seen the video. But if I know our media department, it’s done with a lot of love. I think we need that in football.

‘I believe it’s a good thing. It’s never a bad thing to remind the opponent that this happened before and it will probably happen again.

‘There is a belief here in Malmö that we are good and that we can beat the Rangers.

‘We can see the amount of money Rangers spend on players and coaches and then they are above us. I think their coach earns a little bit more than me for example.

‘We are strong and people respect us so I have no problem with that. But we are also aware of the strength that Rangers possess.’

Meanwhile, Malmo captain Anders Christiansen has defended the country’s opposition to VAR – and believes the use of technology is killing football.

Steven Gerrard didn’t fair much better back in 2021 as, again, Rangers were knocked out

The Swedish Allsvenskan is the outlier as the last of Europe’s top 30 leagues which is still holding out against the introduction of video technology.

Fan protests have been key to resisting the move towards technology and, although VAR will be in operation tonight as per UEFA regulations, Christiansen is happy that Sweden has rejected it.

‘Obviously you know in the European competitions that you’re going to have it, but I don’t think you will find one person here in Sweden that likes VAR,’ said Christiansen.

‘It’s the same for me. I don’t think at the moment that VAR is giving a better product for football. I think there’s too much delay. I think you take out the passion.

‘I come from Denmark and we have it in Denmark. But after every game there’s discussion about VAR. So I don’t think we remove any problem.

‘We just move the problem from one thing to another thing. So I’m really glad that we don’t have VAR in Sweden. I hope we will keep that for a long time.

‘We have been in Europe before and played games with VAR. It’s different but it’s not like we cannot handle it.

‘Have the fans played an important part in resisting in Sweden? Yes, they have.’
