The great actress Isabella Rossellini has been selected to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Film Academy.
Isabella Rossellini has been one of the most distinguished actresses working in Hollywood during the last five decades and, now, the European Film Academy will honor her work on December 7th at the 37th European Film Awards in Switzerland. Her most famous role may be in David Lynch’s great 1986 drama, Blue Velvet, but, truth be told, she’s made her roles come to life with passion and sophistication in many other, lesser seen pictures and even on television in the hit TV show, “Friends.” Ross (David Schwimmer) tried to hit on Rossellini on a hilarious episode of “Friends” which is quite memorable and became a favorite episode for fans in reruns thanks to the hilarity Rossellini brought to the part she played
A graduate of Hunter College who holds a master’s degree in animal behaviour, Rossellini was a class act ever since she first graced the silver screen back in 1979. Blue Velvet catapulted her to stardom in 1986, as stated, but in Peter Weir’s Fearless from 1993, the actress brought to life a character with fierce emotional intensity that showed her range as actress. In that film, she played a woman who works in dance and is married to Jeff Bridges’ character who believes he is no longer vulnerable to death after surviving a plane crash. One of the most underappreciated films ever made, Weir’s movie showcased Rossellini in a moving and powerful role. As she confronts her husband about his relationship with another survivor (Rosie Perez) in the film, Rossellini added an elegance to her role which was absolutely unforgettable.
Rossellini played in big budget films too when she co-starred with Bruce Willis, Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn in Death Becomes Her which came out the year before Fearless.
Rossellini is the daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini and proved to be one of the best working actresses in a relatively small but substantial body of work that has spanned five decades.
These days, Rossellini is still working and recently graced the screen in this year’s La Chimera for which she received excellent reviews. A couple of years back, she did voice-over work for A24’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On and Rossellini was absolutely brilliant in the role, adding her signature sophistication to the role she played. She will be playing a nun in the soon-to-be-released Conclave.
Rossellini deserves this honor and it’s great to see her being recognized for Lifetime Achievement after a career of truly memorable roles. David Lynch fans know the risks she took for Blue Velvet and she proved she was “fearless” in the choices she made throughout her distinguished career.
