After announcing a first batch of selected feature films in August (read the news), the European Film Academy has announced the 16 more films chosen – with the help of a diverse range of European invited experts – to complete its shortlist of 45 fiction features competing at the European Film Awards. This takes the number of European countries represented from 26 to 28.

As a reminder, eligible for the European Film Awards are European feature films which, among other criteria, had their first official screening between 1 June 2023 and 31 May 2024 and have a European director (should a film director not be European, ‘provided they have a European refugee or similar status or have lived in Europe and worked in the European film industry for at least five consecutive years).

The nominations of the European Film Awards will be revealed on 5 November, after the 5,000 members of the European Film Academy will have watched the selected films and voted on the nominations in the categories ‘European Film’, ‘European Director’, ‘European Actress’, European Actor’, ‘European Screenwriter’ and ‘European Documentary’. The members of the European Film Academy will then vote for the winner who will be announced on 7 December 2024 in Lucerne. In addition to voting, the selected films will be considered for the Excellence Awards in the categories European Cinematography, European Editing, European Production Design, European Costume Design, European Make-up & Hair, European Original Score, European Sound and European Visual Effects which will be determined by an eight-member jury consisting of representatives of the different arts and crafts.
