Fly and flop vacations are a tonic now and again, but travel is also a way to learn about new cultures and traditions. There are many hotels in Europe that offer programs to help guests pick up a new skill or craft during their stay. From yodelling in the Austrian Alps to pottery in Portugal, here are some of the most interesting courses you can take while holidaying in Europe.

Learn Wood Crafting, Yodelling And Mountain Biking At Eriro, Austria

High up in the Austrian alps at 1,550m sits eriro, a secluded nine-bedroom hotel only accessible by cable car. Derived from the Old German High word meaning ‘beginning of the forest’, eriro’s ethos is to connect guests with nature, which sees generations of mountain traditions celebrated through an array of signature experiences.

Guests can join one of eriro’s three in-house guides who specialise in nature, action, and wilderness. They may choose to embark on guided barefoot hikes through the forest, meditate in the wilderness, mountain bike, climb, learn to craft using local techniques with raw materials from the mountain like wood and stone, indulge in world-class skiing or give the 16th century form of singing, yodelling, a try.

Discover The Ancient Art Of Pottery In Portugal At São Lourenço Do Barrocal

Sitting amongst 780-hectares of wildflower-strewn meadows, olive groves and vineyards in Portugal’s wild Alentejo region, São Lourenço do Barrocal is a recently restored farmstead hotel, winery and spa. The estate offers various workshops, including one course led by local ceramicist, Helene Fale where guests can learn the ancient Alentejan art of pottery. Working with a potter’s wheel, guests craft their own terracotta piece using the sgraffito technique to carve intricate patterns.

Practice Calligraphy And Embroidery At Hotel Castello Di Reschio, Umbria

At the heart of the 3,700-acre pastoral estate in Italy’s Umbria region lies Hotel Castello di Reschio. Launched this year, ‘Creative Contemplation’ invites guests to engage in artistic traditions. Drawing inspiration from ancient monastic practices, guests can master the art of calligraphy or illuminated letters, an age-old technique.

There is also the option to try the ancient craft of paper marbling or needlepoint and embroidery in the estate’s historic Stables’ Tach Room. For those with a penchant for functional art, the craft of basketry awaits under the guidance of skilled artisans. Guests will explore five different basket-making techniques, culminating in the creation of a trivet—a mat on which to place hot pots and pans.

Learn The Sport Of Skijoring At Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, St Moritz

St. Moritz’s alpine icon Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is gearing up for its 129th winter season, where guests can experience winter activities by day and fine dining by night. One daytime pursuit is skijoring, a sport of Norwegian origin translating roughly as ‘ski driving’, where partakers are strapped to skis and pulled around the frozen lake by a horse.

The practice dates back to the days when Arctic hunters harnessed reindeer to cross the frozen landscape in search of food. In the nearby town of Samedan, guests of Badrutt’s Palace can try the sport with the help of a jockey, who will steer the horse as they ski for added safety.
