If they sacrifice him, then the OVP could even start negotiations. The People’s Party, on the other hand, will be able to count on the support of the Austrian president, Alexander Van der Bellen. According to the constitution, the president appoints the government and can reject candidates for chancellor and minister: as a former leader of the Green Party – with a visceral dislike for the FPO – Van der Bellen does not seem inclined to allow a far-right ideologue to take power.
