Austria exit poll, far-right breaks through: Fpo exceeds expectations. Chancellor Nehammer

In Austria break through the black wave ofultra-right: I’FPO, a party accused of Nazi sympathies and anti-Semitism, exceeds expectations in the elections for the renewal of Parliament and reaches almost 30 percent of the votes. The OVP collapses of Chancellor Karl Nehammer (with a drop of 11 percentage points), but now it is a government conundrum. In Austria, in fact, according to the exit poll broadcast by state television Orf, the party of theultra-right is leading the 29,1% while the Ovp, the Popular Party of Nehammer is at 26,2%.

I social democrats of the Spo to 20,4% (which thus emerges as a third party) while the Verdi at8,6% (five points less than in 2019). “Thank you, thank you to every single voter: today the Austrians have made history,” was the first comment of the FPO spokesman, Michael Schneiderlitz. “The population has clearly expressed itself in favor of change,” he added. In Europe, it is remembered, the Fpo is part of the “patriot”of Viktor Orban, Marine Le Pen e Matteo Salvini.

Austria exit poll: far right breaks through but now government is a puzzle

It is true that in Austria the expression used already in these hours is “Blaues Beben”, that is to say “blue earthquake”. In Vienna and not only, in fact, the reasoning revolves around possible coalitions which should have a minimum of 92 seats. The secretary general of the FPO, Christian Hafenecker, has already implicitly called for the resignation of OVP leader Nehammer: “If you have suffered such a historic defeat, then in reality there is only one consequence,” he added.

But they are the USEFULL to make the scenario more complicated. Yes, because according to the projections on the deputies of the lower house of the Vienna Parliament, the Fpo would conquer 57 seats (+26 compared to the last elections), the OVP 52 (-19) and the Spo 40 seats. Next, we should consider the liberals of Neos and the Greens, both with 17 seats. However, it is unlikely that the FPO will be able to lead a government. In order to obtain a majority, in fact, at least 92 of the 183 seats are needed of the Nationalrat (the lower house of the Austrian Parliament). The far right would therefore need an ally at its side in order to reach 92, but the only politically closest party, the OVP, has already announced that it has no intention of participating in government agreements Freedom Party of Austria.

Austria exit poll: who is Kickl and why is there a veto on him?

Kickl, 55, from Carinthia, current leader of the FPO and Minister of the Interior in 2017, has already announced that, in case of victory, he will be the “Volkskanzler” (that is, “the people’s chancellor”). Kickl himself had shown an iron fist on immigration – wrote theHandle – promising to turn Austria into a fortress, and launched a frontal assault on the security services, resulting in Western partners suspending intelligence sharing. His bellicose plans were interrupted by the fall of the government, in the wake of theIbiza gate: in May 2019, in fact, a video emerged (filmed on the Spanish island) in which the then leader of the FPO offered to sell political favors to a woman who identified herself as the niece of a Russian oligarch.

Well, if the FPO sticks to the logic of the Spitzenkandidat, confirming Kickl as its centre-forward, the People’s Party will close the door and aim for a coalition with the Social Democrats and the Greens. If they sacrifice him, then the OVP could even start negotiations. The People’s Party, on the other hand, will be able to count on the support of the Austrian president, Alexander Van der Bellen. According to the constitution, the president appoints the government and can reject candidates for chancellor and minister: as a former leader of the Green Party – with a visceral dislike for the FPO – Van der Bellen does not seem inclined to allow a far-right ideologue to take power.

Austria: What Kickl, leader of the far-right Fpo, said

“The election result could not be clearer than today, the voters have expressed their will, the election result is a clear confirmation that things cannot continue like this in the country. We are ready to lead a government and ready for the talks with all parties“. The leader of the Fpo said this, Herbert Kickl speaking on Austrian television Orf after the exit polls. While waiting for the final data, for the Fpo this is a result that, if confirmed, will have a significant weight on the balance of the country and Europe.
