Summit of the Future

Co-facilitators Sweden and Zambia led the Intergovernmental Process to negotiate the Global Digital Compact. It was adopted at the Summit of the Future 22 September, as an appendix of the Pact of the Future.

Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch addressed the Summit of the Future on behalf of Sweden. She said that the compact is a “roadmap to a digital future that is open, safe, secure, sustainable and inclusive,”

“The Global Digital Compact will enable closing the digital divides and turbocharge the Sustainable Development Goals,” Busch said in her speech.

She also addressed another core issue of the Summit; Artificial Intelligence.

“Through the Global Digital Compact, we are advocating for key AI initiatives, including a Scientific Panel, a Global Dialogue on Governance, and Capacity Building Fund,” Busch said.

“These initiatives aim to ensure that AI serves humanity and upholds our shared values. This is the foundation we urgently need to secure a future where AI benefits everyone.”

Iceland welcomes adoption of the Pact

Icelandic Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson was the only other Nordic representative to speak on the first day of the two day Summit of the Future Summit.

The Prime Minister welcomed the adoption of the Pact of the Future, including the emphasis on Sustainable Development, Human Rights and the Rule of Law.

“The Pact for the Future and its annexes testify to the vitality of the multilateral system with the United Nations at its core,” Mr. Benediktsson said. “No other organisation has the convening power of this great body. At a time of conflict between and within many member states, a successful outcome of a global summit is something to be celebrated.”
