SSAB and Smith Stål Team Up to Bring Fossil-Free Steel to Norway’s Growing Green Market

(IN BRIEF) SSAB and Smith Stål have entered into a collaboration to bring fossil-free steel to the Norwegian market. Smith Stål, one of Norway’s leading steel distributors, will begin offering SSAB’s eco-friendly steel, including SSAB Zero™ and SSAB Fossil-free™ steel. SSAB Zero™ is made from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity and biogas, while SSAB Fossil-free™ steel is produced with the innovative HYBRIT® technology, which uses hydrogen instead of coal, eliminating CO2 emissions. This partnership aims to strengthen the sustainable value chain in Norway, catering to industries such as construction, offshore, and more.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 30-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — SSAB and Norwegian steel distributor Smith Stål have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on future deliveries of fossil-free steel, aiming to build a sustainable value chain for customers in Norway. Smith Stål, a key player in Norway’s steel market with a comprehensive product range that includes plates, beams, and pipes, will soon offer SSAB’s eco-friendly steel options.

Eirik Berg, Director at Smith Stål, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the growing demand for sustainable steel in the Norwegian industrial, construction, and offshore sectors. “Being one of Norway’s top steel distributors, we see a significant demand from our clients for sustainable solutions, and we are proud to be able to offer SSAB’s fossil-free steel in the near future,” said Berg.

SSAB has made significant strides in reducing carbon emissions in steel production with two pioneering products: SSAB Zero™ and SSAB Fossil-free™ steel. SSAB Zero™ is made from recycled steel, produced using fossil-free electricity and biogas, and has been commercially available since 2023. Meanwhile, SSAB Fossil-free™ steel, developed using the HYBRIT® technology in collaboration with LKAB and Vattenfall, eliminates coal in production by using hydrogen, resulting in zero CO2 emissions. This steel is currently available through pilot deliveries.

“We are thrilled to partner with Smith Stål, expanding our fossil-free steel offerings to the Norwegian market,” said Matts Nilsson, SSAB’s Head of Sales for Sweden and Norway. “Together, we are creating a sustainable value chain for customers in Norway.”
