Denmark backs the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara

NEW YORK: (PanOrient News) Denmark has affirmed that it considers “the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 a serious and reliable contribution to the ongoing UN process and a good basis for a mutually acceptable solution.”
During talks held in New York, a joint statement was adopted by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen. This statement, made on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, affirmed that ‘the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 is a serious and reliable contribution to the ongoing UN process and a good basis for a solution agreed upon by all parties.’
The joint statement from Denmark and Morocco underscores their alignment with the United Nations-led process for Western Sahara. They reiterate their support for the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and efforts to reach a peaceful solution acceptable to all parties, in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Analysts say Denmark’s new stance is not just a shift in policy, but a strategic alignment with the international dynamic led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. It reinforces the autonomy plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, echoing the prevailing sentiment across Europe and the wider European continent.
