Mongolia and Ireland are the first stops in Mr. Lam’s tour, which takes place with relations between Vietnam and those countries flourishing.
Vietnam-Mongolia ties on the rise
Vietnam and Mongolia established diplomatic relations on November 17, 1954. Over seven decades, the two nations have deepened cooperation across multiple sectors.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Mongolia Nguyen Tuan Thanh said: “Political, diplomatic, security, and defense relations have grown steadily. Mutual understanding and mutual political trust have been strengthened. The two countries have established close cooperation mechanisms and created a legal framework for bilateral cooperation in various areas. Economic cooperation has thrived, with trade volumes nearly tripling, from 41.4 million USD in 2017 to 132 million USD in 2023.”
Vietnam-Mongolia trade totaled 65.5 million USD in the first seven months of this year while cultural and educational collaboration has increased rapidly. In 1980 Mongolia named a school in Ulaanbaatar after President Ho Chi Minh. The two countries have promoted people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between localities and have supported one another at regional and global forums.
Amid evolving global dynamics, Vietnam and Mongolia are eager to deepen their partnership in a more practical and effective manner.
Ambassador Thanh said: “The two sides need to strengthen existing cooperation mechanisms, especially in economics, trade, and investment. The economic strengths of Vietnam and Mongolia are not competitive but complementary. The two countries have great potential and advantages to boost collaboration in agriculture, education, information technology, digital transformation, renewable energy, and oil and gas exploration.”
The top priority of Party leader and President To Lam’s visit to Mongolia is to elevate bilateral ties to a new level on a par with the long-standing friendship and shared interests of both countries. The two countries are expected to establish a comprehensive partnership during the visit, a new level of bilateral ties that has been anticipated by both sides for a long time.
Vietnam aims to expand cooperation with Ireland – the “Silicon Valley of Europe”
Party General Secretary and President To Lam’s visit to Ireland marks the first state visit by a Vietnamese head of state since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1996. This historic visit aims to advance multifaceted cooperation, particularly in economics, trade, and investment.
Ireland is currently Vietnam’s 6th largest trading partner within the European Union, with bilateral trade totalling 2.7 billion USD in the first seven months of this year. Ireland has 41 investment projects in Vietnam, worth 44 million USD, ranking 61st among 141 countries and territories invested in Vietnam.
As global trends shift toward the green economy, the digital economy, sustainable development, innovation, and advancements in science and technology, Ireland stands out as the “Silicon Valley of Europe.” Renowned as a global hub for pharmaceuticals and technology, it hosts the European headquarters of major tech giants like Google and Meta and boasts a world-class education system, topics which will be high on the agenda for discussions between Party chief and President Lam and Irish leaders and business groups.
Ireland is advancing its “Global Ireland: Delivering in the Asia Pacific Region to 2025” campaign, with Vietnam designated as a priority partner. Both nations are leveraging the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to boost bilateral trade and maximize their strengths and untapped potential.
Building on positive momentum in relations with Mongolia and Ireland, General Secretary and President Lam’s state visits to these two nations will advance the foreign policy set by the 13th National Party Congress, bolster bilateral cooperation, and strengthen ties with each partner.
