After opening their Champions League campaign with a resounding 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava, Celtic headed to Dortmund brimming with confidence that they could secure a positive result.
Instead, they fell flat on their face in what was a dismal evening for Brendan Rodgers’ men at the home of the Bundesliga giants.
Daizen Maeda cancelled out Emre Can’s early penalty to give the Celtic faithful something to cheer about, but their joy was shortlived as the hosts soon rattled home four goals without reply in a devastating first-half rout.
Two more followed after the break as Dortmund ran riot, while Celtic were left to reflect on another humiliation on Europe’s biggest stage.
The scintillating displays of Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy will rightly gather much of the attention, but their job was made significantly easier thanks to a desperate showing from the reigning Scottish Premiership champions.
Here, Mail Sport’s KEVIN MCKENNA rates both sets of players on show during the one-sided contest at the Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund midfielder Emre Can got the scoring under way with an early penalty
Kasper Schmeichel and Callum McGregor reflect after the concession of another goal
Brendan Rodgers admitted his side were ultimately punished for a series of sloppy errors
Borussia Dortmund (4-2-3-1)
Gregor Kobel – 6
Could do nothing about Maeda’s close-range leveller. Only other save of note was a comfortable stop to deny Idah.
Yan Couto – 6
Looked nervous up against the pace of Maeda in the early stages but it wasn’t long before he found his feet.
Waldemar Anton – 7
Strolled through the 90 minutes. Had very little to do, but dealt with everything asked of him with ease.
Nico Schlotterbeck – 7
Had one lapse in concentration during a frantic first 10 minutes, but was otherwise unflustered as he kept Kyogo quiet.
Julian Ryerson – 7
Would have expected a tougher night up against Kuhn. Spent much of the contest bombing forward in support of his team-mates.
Karim Adeyami earned the match ball after firing in in a first-half hat-trick
Emre Can 6.5
Put away the penalty which opened the scoring, but was caught napping at the back post for Celtic’s equaliser.
Pascal Gross – 7
Rarely wasted a pass, providing the platform for his more creative team-mates to rip their tormented visitors apart.
Karim Adeyemi – 9
Unplayable. Ran the Celtic defence ragged in first half and notched a stunning hat-trick. Forced off through injury moments after the restart.
Julian Brandt – 8
Was given the freedom of Dortmund to pull the strings in the middle, and had Celtic’s central trio chasing shadows.
Striker Serhou Guirassy also netted a double for the rampant hosts
Jamie Gittens – 7
Unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet after an enterprising performance down the right-hand side.
Serhou Guirassy – 8
Classy forward grabbed a double and could have had a couple more. A big threat both in the air and on the ground.
Subs:
Duranville (Adeyemi, 48)
Nmecha (Brandt, 62)
Beier (Gross, 62)
Bensebaini (Couto, 62)
Sabitzer (Guirassy, 70)
Subs not used: Meyer, Lotka, Sule, Azhil.
Nuri Sahin – 8
Could afford to put his feet up and enjoy himself after the break thanks to first-half five-goal blitz.
Celtic (4-3-3)
Kasper Schmeichel – 5
Conceded early penalty and saw seven goals fly past, but kept the scoreline down with a series of sharp saves.
Alistair Johnston – 4
One of his most disappointing performances in a Celtic shirt. Had absolutely no answer to the trickery of Gittens.
Auston Trusty – 3
Endured a fierce baptism of fire. Shaky on the ball and lacked conviction. Will have nightmares over Guirassy.
Liam Scales – 5.5
Celtic’s top performer. Spent most of the game running towards his own goal, but made several vital interventions to thwart the hosts.
Auston Trust endured a torrid night at the heart of defence on his full European debut
Greg Taylor – 2.5
Pulled all over the place by Adeyemi during opening period and was put out of his misery with half-time withdrawal.
Callum McGregor – 4
Captain had no influence on proceedings. Failed to get on the ball, and on the rare occasion he did, was wasteful.
Arne Engels – 4
Anonymous. Excellent cross set up Maeda goal but was rarely seen in advanced positions over the rest of the night. Gave away second penalty with clumsy challenge.
Paulo Bernardo – 3
Given the nod ahead of Hatate as reward for fine form of late, but was miles off the pace. Hooked at the interval.
Nicolas Kuhn – 4.5
Barely got a sniff on Celtic’s right. Had decent opportunity in second half but was caught in two minds as chance passed by.
Daizen Maeda got on the scoresheet in the opening stages after prodding home at the back post
Daizen Maeda – 5
Bright start from the Japanese winger, capped with a poacher’s goal. Tried to get forward but was fighting one-man battle.
Kyogo Furuhashi – 4
Left completely isolated up top. Hard to recall him getting a touch of the ball.
Subs:
Valle (Taylor, 45)
Hatate (Bernardo, 45)
Idah (Kyogo, 63)
Yang (Kuhn, 63)
Ralston (Johnston, 86)
Subs not used: Sinisalo, Bain, Palma, McCowan, Nawrocki, Forrest, Welsh.
Brendan Rodgers – 3
Looked crestfallen. A truly horrendous night at the office for the Celtic manager.
Referee: Jose Maria Sanchez (Spain) 7
Attendance: 81,365
