This year’s European Heritage Days festivities have been launched with programmes in more than 40 countries, exploring this year’s theme of “Heritage of Routes, Networks, and Connections.” Lithuania is currently holding the Presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, and has opened the season with a series of events (Europos paveldo dienos) focusing on heritage stories in their geographical and historical context.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Baltic Way, in which two million people created a living chain across Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, in opposition to the terror of occupation, the Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys reflects on the deep cultural ties that connect European nations. In a video message from the historic city of Kaunas, he highlights the significance of this year’s theme, saying “The Baltic Way was our road to freedom.”

In his message, Minister Kairys also underscores the importance of supporting Ukraine as it defends its heritage and freedom, reminding us of Europe’s commitment to diversity and mutual respect. This year marks notable anniversaries for European unity – the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe and the 70th anniversary of the European Cultural Convention. As Lithuania celebrates 30 years of participating in the European Heritage Days, Minister Kairys invites everyone to explore, learn, and discover the rich cultural heritage that unites us all.

The idea of European Heritage Days was born in France 40 years ago. “Since then, the tradition has taken root and connects the European family with even closer links. Let´s explore these cultural routes together. Let´s learn about and discover one another,” Minister Kairys concluded.

Launched by the Council of Europe in 1985 in France, the European Heritage Days have been organised as a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission since 1999. Enabling citizens to explore a wide range of cultural assets through several themed events, European Heritage Days help uncover histories of people and places that have contributed to shape the culture and heritage of Europe. Each year, the European Heritage Days revolve around a theme that all participating countries are encouraged to adopt for their annual programme.
