Latvia’s Ušakovs’ new post in EP related to important international relations

MEP from Latvia Nils Ušakovs was elected to the European Parliament (EP) on Thursday as chairman of the Delegation to the European Union (EU )-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee, the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee and the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee (DSCA), LETA was told by the politician’s office.

According to the office, the committee plays a key role in fostering inter-parliamentary relations between the EU and Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

After the election, Ušakovs stressed the importance of strengthening relations between the EU and the countries of the South Caucasus. In his opinion, the South Caucasus is a region of great strategic, cultural and economic importance, located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.

“Recent conflicts, as well as wider events in the world, have changed the geopolitical landscape, creating new challenges and opportunities for cooperation between the EU and the countries of the South Caucasus. The development of the situation underlines the need for strong engagement and efforts to achieve long-term stability in the region,” said the MEP.

He noted that as we continue to move forward, the priority will be to promote dialogue, promote regional stability and strengthen cooperation in key areas such as security, the rule of law and human rights. Ušakovs emphasized that the changing geopolitical environment requires renewed attention to cooperation and confidence building, especially after conflicts that affect both the region and the wider international order. He stated that the delegation will aim to support initiatives that promote peace and prosperity while upholding the values of democracy and human rights.

The newly elected chairman is committed to working closely with his counterparts in the South Caucasus, as well as with the European institutions, to support the democratic processes in these three countries and contribute to a peaceful, prosperous and stable future for the region, the MEP’s office said.
