Lorenzo Vella, Chief of the Maltese Representation to the European Commission, dies

Lorenzo Vella, Chief of Maltese Representation to the European Commission, has died. He was 43 years old.

Vella, who was a father of two children, was appointed to this position in March last year. Prior to this, he occupied the post of Chief of Staff for the Health Ministry, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the past, he also served as general secretary  of Labour Youth Forum (Forum Żgħażagħ Laburisti).

Lorenzo Vella appointed new EC head in Malta 

Vella had extensive experience of 15 years in European affairs in Brussels and Luxembourg and even in the Maltese public service.

Before this, he was the Maltese Deputy Permanent Representative  to the European Union in Brussels, and represented Malta at COREPER I. From 2012 to 2014, he also worked in General Directorate for Employment , Social Affairs and Inclusion of the European Commission as a programme manager, responsible for monitoring general developments in Maltese politics in regards to the objectives of Strategy Europe 2020.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Ian Borg paid tribute to Vella and said “you left us too early, even though you were suffering, friend”.

He sent his condolences to his wife, and children.

Labour Youth (Żgħażagħ Laburisti) and the Nationalist Party also sent their condolences. The Nationalist Party described him “diplomatic and diligent, as required by his role” and said that his absence “will truly be felt in many European institutions”.
