Foreign Minister Kamikawa shaking hands with Foreign Minister Elmedin KONAKOVIĆ

On July 18, commencing at 19:15 p.m. local time (1:15 a.m. JST on July 19), for approximately 85 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a Japan-Bosnia and Herzegovina Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Working Dinner with H.E. Mr. Elmedin KONAKOVIĆ, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina during her visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The overview is as follows.

Regarding the bilateral relations, Minister Konaković welcomed Minister Kamikawa’s visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina and expressed his wish to further develop bilateral relations in a wide range of fields. In response, Minister Kamikawa stated that she was pleased to meet Minister Konaković for the first time and expressed her wish to work together to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law.

Minister Kamikawa explained Japan’s involvement in the region under the ‘Western Balkans Cooperation Initiative’ and stated that in order for the Western Balkans, which experienced numerous conflicts, to continue developing strongly and enjoy peace and stability, it is important to promote peace and stability among the countries in the region and cooperation among them, and integrate the region into Europe. Referring to Japan’s support for anti-personnel mine action, medical and health care, logistics and transport infrastructure, security measures and other assistance, as well as the planned regional technical cooperation to reduce the risk of forest fires, Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan continues to support the socio-economic development of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its integration into Europe.

In response, Minister Konaković expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support to date as well as new supports. The two Ministers shared the recognition that economic development is important for the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina and concurred to strengthen the cooperation between the two.

Regarding the current situation in the Western Balkans, Minister Konaković explained the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In response, Minister Kamikawa stressed the importance of stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the face of separatist movements and expressed her hope that all parties would unite to build the nation while strengthening the rule of law and other measures. The two Foreign Ministers confirmed that they would work together towards stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On regional issues, the two Foreign Ministers exchanged views on various regional and international issues, and confirmed that they would continue to work together on the situation in Ukraine, East Asia and others.
