A closer look at Santa Cruz, Aruba’s 8-3 win over Brno, Czech Republic on Saturday at Volunteer Stadium.
PLAY OF THE GAME — Nishant Toledo’s RBI single: It may not have been a hit that drew a tons of oohs and ahhs from those in attendance, but Toledo’s RBI single helped spark Aruba in the bottom of the first inning. His shot with two outs gave Aruba a 2-0 lead and helped the team gain momentum through the next three innings en route to taking an 8-0 lead by the third.
ARUBA PLAYER OF THE GAME –Henry Kranson: Kranson started the game for Aruba on the mound and earned the win en route to throwing a solid game in his time before being relieved. The Aruba pitcher threw 3 1/3 innings of great baseball, allowing just two hits, one earned run, one walk and striking out six batters.
CZECH REPUBLIC PLAYER OF THE GAME — Dennis Dasek: The starting left fielder for Europe and Africa is the team’s leadoff batter, and he showcased why that is on Saturday at Volunteer Stadium. The Czech Republic standout went 2 for 2 on Saturday and scored a run. He was also Czech Republic’s lone player to record multiple hits in the game.
BIG INNING — Aruba’s third: Aruba held a lead against the Europe and Africa Regional champions from the start of the game, but it was the third inning in which Aruba broke the game opened and put distance between themselves and Czech Republic. That five-run outburst gave Aruba an 8-0 lead. Czech Republic answered with three runs in the fourth, but that would be the closest Czech Republic came to rallying.
BEST EFFORT — Aruba’s pitching: Yes, Czech Republic did score three runs in the top of the fourth inning. But Aruba’s four pitchers were able to quiet the Europe and Africa Regional champions’ bats for majority of the game. Czech Republic was limited to just five hits — all singles — as Henry Kranson, Jairon Bedoya, Antoine John Croes and Keon Croes combined in the win.
FLASHING LEATHER — Dennis Dasek came up with as clutch of a catch as you could make in a high-pressure situation on Saturday at Volunteer Stadium. In the bottom of the second inning with bases loaded, Aruba hit a shot to left field. That’s where Dasek dove and caught the ball just inches from the ground, holding onto it for the inning-ending out and prevented Aruba from tacking on more runs.
WHAT IT MEANS — With its victory on Saturday, Santa Cruz, Aruba advances to face Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Volunteer Stadium in an elimination contest. Brno, Czech Republic is eliminated from the Little League World Series following a 0-2 run at the tournament. Czech Republic fell to Cuba, 4-1, on Thursday. The Europe and Africa Regional champions held a 1-0 lead early against Cuba in that first game.
