As Malta prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of Europe in May 2025, Prime Minister Robert Abela held a bilateral meeting with the Council’s secretary-general, Alain Berset, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The discussions focused on key issues such as peace and security, with particular attention to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. Abela emphasised the importance of regional cooperation, noting Malta’s role as Chair of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). He praised the multilateral efforts of the Council of Europe in working with international organisations like the OSCE to address these challenges.
Accompanying the Prime Minister for the talks were Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, Permanent Secretary Christopher Cutajar, and Mark Mallia, Head of the Secretariat of the Office of the Prime Minister.
Malta, a member of the Council of Europe since 1965, will take on the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers from May to November 2025. This follows its high-profile roles on the UN Security Council and OSCE, both of which conclude at the end of this year. The Council of Europe’s primary aim is to promote democracy and human rights across its 46 member states, representing 700 million citizens.
