New and renovated hotels in Vienna: Travel Weekly

Just because Vienna is known for its historic architectural marvels doesn’t mean the city is afraid of change, especially when it comes to hotels. From newbuilds to properties housed in Imperial buildings, here’s a sampling of what’s new and newly renovated.

Clients enamored of Vienna’s storied Old Town, for example, can opt for the Hotel zur Wiener Staatsoper, located in city center just off Karntner Strasse, a popular shopping mecca.

The 100-plus-year-old property, which has hosted such luminaries as Gustav Mahler and Leonard Bernstein, has recently undergone a complete renovation. Spearheaded by British interior designer Nina Campbell, the revamped property features 12 rooms and suites — one room and one suite per floor.

The highlight is a two-story suite for up to four people with views of the city center and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Or explore the city’s art deco period at the 125-room Hotel Astoria, which has been operating as a hotel since 1912. Film buffs might enjoy knowing that Orson Welles and the entire crew of “The Third Man” were guests

The property unveiled the results of a year-long, nearly $17 million renovation in May, preserving its historic art deco character. Highlights include the Beletage suite, which features a balcony, a four-poster bed, separate living room and bedroom and historic fireplaces, wall mirrors and chandeliers.

Other features include the restored art deco lobby, the Astoria Bar and seminar and event spaces.

One of Vienna’s most famous attractions is its Spanish Riding School, and clients can delve into that history at the 342-room Imperial Riding School, a hotel in Vienna’s 3rd district. The property, part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, opened in May in a building that was constructed in the mid-19th century as a military riding school.

The makeover of the property, which blends historic and modern design elements, was overseen by British interior design firm Goddard Littlefair.

Amenities include a restaurant with a bar and garden, an indoor pool and space for events, meetings and conferences.

Or move forward in time to the Hoxton Vienna, housed in a mid-century building, which opened this spring.

The British Hoxton Group’s first hotel in Vienna, the nearly 200-room property features a 1950s-era, listed facade whose lobby and staircase reflect that design aesthetic. Located steps from Vienna’s Stadtpark, the Hoxton Vienna features a basement bar; a top-floor restaurant and bar with city views and a pool; and event and meetings facilities.

For visitors looking to explore emerging parts of the city, the Hampton by Hilton Vienna City West opened in August.

The 355-room property is the brand’s second in Vienna and its largest in Europe. It features a triangular shape and a location adjacent to the Langenfeldgasse subway station, offering access to Schonbrunn Palace, the city center and Meidling station, a hub for international long-distance trains.

Fans of smart technology can consider the Hotel Schani UNO City, which opened in June opposite the Vienna International Center, one of the four U.N. headquarters worldwide, and near the Austria Center Vienna, a key venue for  large conferences and meetings.

The 202-room property features an integrated building automation system that includes energy-saving infrared movement detectors in every room, as well a single system for recording lighting, heating and air-conditioning consumption; recycled materials; and greenery in the public areas as part of the sustainable design.

Amenities include conference rooms and a meetings room with co-working facilities.

More environmental innovations are among the attractions at the family-friendly H2 Hotel Wien Schonbrunn (German-only website but with an English-speaking virtual assistant), a 15-minute walk from the famous palace in the western part of the city.

The new property, which opened in March, features 87 quadruple rooms and 178 double rooms, spread out over the second to the 11th floor of the Vio Plaza high-rise building.

The interior features a contemporary design with clean lines; the H2 Hub, which serves food and drinks; and a commitment to sustainable technology. The H2 Hotel Wien Schonbrunn holds a platinum LEED certification — for example, wastewater from the Wiental canal is used to cool and heat the building, and electricity is generated using photovoltaic technology.
