The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine announces a significant partnership with the Government of Belgium, marked by the signing of financing agreements totalling EUR 9 million.
This vital contribution will support the UNDP Green Energy Recovery Programme in Ukraine, which aims to address the urgent energy needs arising from the ongoing crisis.
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has suffered devastating damage due to the war, with recent assessments indicating that power generation capacity has been halved, causing widespread daily disruptions and power outages across the country. The funding from Belgium will facilitate the repair and reconstruction of critical energy facilities, ensuring the continuation of essential services for millions of Ukrainians.
Belgian Ambassador to Ukraine Peter Van De Velde emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “Belgium stands firmly with Ukraine during these challenging times. Our commitment to supporting the UNDP’s Green Energy Recovery Programme is a testament to our solidarity and shared vision for a sustainable and resilient future for all Ukrainians.”
Jaco Cilliers, the UNDP’s Resident Representative in Ukraine, said, “This investment from Belgium is a crucial step towards revitalizing Ukraine’s energy sector and strengthening its resilience. Together, we aim to ensure that the people of Ukraine have access to reliable energy, which is essential for recovering from this crisis and building a sustainable future.”
The proposed interventions under this partnership will focus on cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, where the need for effective energy solutions is most pressing. Through targeted actions such as the deployment of backup generation systems and enhancements to local energy infrastructures, the UNDP aims to improve access to crucial services like heating, electricity, and clean water.
Through partnerships with international donors such as Belgium, the UNDP is dedicated to ensuring that the people of Ukraine have reliable access to essential services that promote their well-being and help rebuild their lives amidst the ongoing challenges.
