In a step towards advancing gender equality and social transformation, UNESCO New Delhi Regional Office and GRÓ’s Gender Equality Studies and Training programme (GEST) came together to forge a strategic partnership that offers alumni from GEST an exclusive placement opportunity in New Delhi, allowing them to apply their expertise in gender and development in practical settings.

This collaboration was formalized through a bilateral meeting and launch ceremony led by Mr. Tim Curtis, Director of UNESCO New Delhi Regional Office and Martin Eyjólfsson, Permanent Secretary of State, Iceland on 23 February at UNESCO House.

The ceremony was complemented by a dialogue highlighting the initiatives undertaken by both UNESCO and Iceland in advancing gender equality and providing avenues for youth in India to actively participate in this crucial agenda. The dialogue brought together experts from UNESCO and Iceland who shared insights and ideas for meaningful engagement on gender equality issues.

Iceland, has long been at the forefront of championing women’s rights and gender inclusivity, not forgetting the role of men and boys. In Iceland, gender equality is not just a “women’s issue”; it is everyone’s issue. The nation’s unwavering commitment to gender parity is evidenced by its concrete actions to bridge gender gaps in various spheres of society, including education, politics, and the workforce.

Barbershop toolkit

For example, the ‘Barbershop Toolkit’, a capacity building methodology developed by Iceland looks at innovative ways to mobilize men to address discriminatory stereotypes by identifying and creating ways for men to talk about and engage in promoting gender equality.

UNESCO’s Transforming MENtalities seeks to understand the different notions of masculinities and how these expressions can be included in gender transformative efforts. By identifying effective policies, incentives, and actions, we strive to support key stakeholders, with knowledge, best practices, network support, and practical tools to bring about mindset shifts and promote gender equality.

Importance of youth

The expert panel was attended by young students from various universities and disciplines. The experts highlighted the importance of youth involvement in advancing gender equality by providing practical strategies for action. The youth at the session engaged with the experts and posed pressing questions, such as “how to confront inherent biases, navigate power dynamics between genders, and combat harmful stereotypes linked to femininity”.

In a world marred by persistent gender disparities and inequalities, fostering gender equality stands as a critical imperative for sustainable development and a just society rooted in the principles of human rights.

The event functioned as a platform for dialogue and exchange, empowering young participants with the knowledge and inspiration to drive positive change in their communities.
