Sausages sizzled on the grill, beer flowed and the crowd of mostly Europhobes and Putinphiles squelched through the mud.

Matteo Salvini took to the stage and backed by Viktor Orban, the Hungarian prime minister, and other leaders opposed to immigration, the veteran of the Italian hard right won back his spurs as a populist firebrand.

Salvini lapped up the limelight at the Glastonbury-like rally held each year by his League party at Pontida, near Bergamo.

His scramble back to prominence after a poor showing in recent elections was guaranteed when prosecutors in Sicily last month sought to jail him for six years for stranding a boatload of rescued migrants at sea when he was interior minister in 2019.
