Tomorrow, the Executive Vice-President will head to Velenje for the Annual Dialogue of the Coal Regions in Transition Initiative. This event, co-organised by the European Commission, gathers stakeholders from coal, peat, lignite, and oil shale regions across the EU. Discussions will centre on assessing progress, discussing investments from the Just Transition Fund, and exploring opportunities in today’s evolving energy landscape.

Šefčovič will kick off the proceedings with opening remarks and participate in the session ‘5+ years of Coal Regions in Transition – perspectives of industrial and green transition in coal+ regions’. Following this, he will visit green revitalisation projects around Lake Velenje and hold a high-level working lunch with Coal Regions Governors to strategize on sustainable development.

Upon arrival in Croatia, Šefčovič will meet with Minister Marija Vučković of Environmental Protection and Green Transition. On Friday, his schedule includes bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Minister of Economy Ante Šušnjar. Additionally, he will participate in a conference focusing on the role of clean technologies in driving competitiveness and economic growth in Croatia. The Executive Vice-President is slated to deliver a keynote address and join a high-level panel with Minister Šime Erlić of Regional Development and EU Funds, and State Secretary Ivan Vidiš from the Ministry of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy.

Šefčovič’s visit underscores the European Union’s commitment to accelerating the green transition and supporting regions in their shift towards sustainable economic practices. His engagements aim to strengthen cooperation between national and regional authorities, laying the groundwork for a greener and more resilient future in Europe.
