Circular economy: Italy grows in Europe. A prize ignites the competition between local authorities and businesses

When in a country like Italy we talk about circular economy, we have to be pragmatic. Deceptions do not have a long life and this is enough to say that institutions or companies that want to work for an economy without waste have many opportunities to demonstrate it. Much better if their campaigns go hand in hand with the investmentsi.

According to the European Commission’s indicators on the recycling rate, Italy is among the top five European countries together with Germany, France, Poland and Spain. The system is improving, despite the lack of infrastructure, the lack of specific interventions in some areas of the country and certain bad habits of citizens. To demonstrate that they are pragmatic, recognized and rewarded, local authorities and companies have the opportunity until November to participate in an award that aims to stand out from all the other celebrations of successes: it is the “Towards a circular economy” award.

The title says it all, but the Solidarity Foundation Cogeme has organized the 2024 edition with subjects among the most sensitive to the sustainable development goals. Among the organizers there are, in fact, the Kyoto Club, the University of Brescia and the Catholic University of Milan, the Alliance for Sustainable Development, the offices of the Lombardy Region, the Cariplo Foundation. It is an award that wants to recognize the excellence of those who have implemented real things, “created, started, or even just approved and authorized projects, activities and/or services related to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”. The catalog of Italian events that highlight activities of sustainable economy is vast, even more so when the green seal is used to conquer markets or consensus. It could also happen here in six months when the winners will be known. The aim is to publicize good sustainability practices “as well as valorize the positive things that are already being done at the public and private system level”. Applications to participate can be sent by November 25 and there are two areas of competition: local authorities and the business world. The Cogeme Foundation is committed to these issues and will only award the winners in March with a plaque. It will be a true icon for each of the two categories.

Creating new recycling chains

Italy is the second manufacturing country in the EU and in a turbulent phase like the one we are going through due to the import of raw materials, the increase in energy costs, structural imbalances, the debate on the European Green Deal, it must reduce the unstable economic factors by incentivising recovery chains and reuse of materials. The economic burden of waste and delays weighs on the State budget and on the turnover of companies, and has a very high social cost. Among the merits of the Award is certainly having put the two essential parts of the State – institutions and companies – into the competition, which before participating will have to ask themselves if they really have the requirements to receive the plaque. Being rejected is a great nuisance and neither of the two competitors should deserve the minus sign. We will know in 2025.
