Celebrating Europe Day - A Day of Unity

Europe Day, celebrated annually on May 9, is a significant occasion that unites Europeans in commemorating peace, unity, and cooperation throughout our continent. This day is considered as the starting point of today’s European Union as it commemorates the 1950 declaration by then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. Schuman proposed a supranational institution to oversee coal and steel industries, aiming to foster unity and peace in war-torn Europe. Despite challenges, the European integration journey continues to evolve, driven by principles of solidarity and progress.

On Europe Day, the essence of the European project’s core message remains steadfast: united in diversity, as our collective strength lies in unity. It provides a moment to cherish our diversity, commemorate our shared values, and embrace our unique European identity. As we celebrate this day each year, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of solidarity and cooperation in shaping the future of our continent.

This year’s Europe Day holds special significance for Malta and nine other countries as they commemorate the 20th anniversary of their accession to the European Union. For Malta, this milestone marks two decades of partnership and cooperation within the EU, reflecting on the journey of growth, progress, and shared values that have shaped the nation’s identity on the European stage. Alongside fellow Member States, Malta celebrates the achievements of the past two decades while looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

This year’s Europe Day will also offer insights into the upcoming European elections, which hold substantial influence in shaping EU democracy, its priorities and policies, empowering citizens to influence decision-making and ensure local representation within the European Parliament.
