What Europe Wants From France’s Finance Minister

Welcome to the Brussels Edition, Bloomberg’s daily briefing on what matters most in the heart of the European Union.

French Finance Minister Antoine Armand will present the priorities of the new government and plans to cut the deficit to his euro-area peers today. France may persuade the European Commission to grant it an extra three years — on top of the current four-year deadline — to meet the deficit target if it submits a few additional reforms to bolster debt sustainability, we’re told. To grant such leeway, the commission is looking for tweaks to the tax system to make it more efficient — as well as for an improvement in spending reviews. The details will be discussed in the coming days in order to finalize France’s medium-term fiscal roadmap, already delayed by fraught negotiations to form a government. Bond markets are watching closely.
