Primary Health Care (PHC) stands as the principal interface between the health system and communities – the locus where the formalized system meshes with people’s lives. More than that, primary health care can shape and reshape health systems to make them more accessible, more integrated and more sustainable.

This international symposium will bring together health stakeholders and PHC enthusiasts from within Spain and Europe with the aim of presenting two key publications coordinated by Spain’s Ministry of Health, WHO, and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies.

The first is an in-depth case study on PHC in Spain, a country which has spent decades investing in and nurturing a truly PHC-oriented health system, from which other European countries can draw important lessons.

The second publication is a global study analyzing the current evidence on all things PHC, with a focus on countries’ initiatives and efforts at implementation. It offers insights into key lessons and best practices around PHC governance, financing, workforce, medicines, infrastructure, and digital technologies for PHC.

Together, these publications will frame a round table discussion with policy-makers and experts from around Europe to collectively reflect on how European health systems can transform towards more holistic, people-centred care.
