The situation in the affected areas is difficult and there are still villages that have been cut off. A criminal investigation into the quarry, from which the flash flood and landslides originated, is underway. Due to the opposition of the Serbian ministers in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Council of Ministers a national day of mourning has not been declared, and instead separate decisions were adopted by the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s two entities and the District of Brčko.

At the request of Croatian Member of European Parliament Željana Zovko, the agenda of tomorrow’s session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg will include a discussion on the consequences of the devastating floods that hit Bosnia and Herzegovina last week. Zovko today explained why she requested the discussion be put on the agenda: “So that I can request that all of the financial means the European Union has at its disposal from the Solidarity Fund for Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece and France, be made available to Bosnia and Herzegovina because it is a candidate country and candidate countries are allowed to request such funding. I think that this is the best way to help Bosnia and Herzegovina in this specific situation. I have also requested that the politicization of the distribution of funds from the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance III, which would enable the freeing up of roughly one billion euros.”

Meanwhile, the Croatian Red Cross has collected more than €160 000 in aid for the victims of the disaster in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The spokeswoman for the Croatian Red Cross, Katarina Zorić: “The response from Croatian citizens has been good. As the funds arrive we immediately pay them into the account of the Red Cross in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because we know what a crisis situation requires, and that some things have to be resolved very quickly. We’ve had quite a few calls regarding material donations, but for now, in agreement with the Red Cross in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we exclusively are collecting financial aid, given that right now this is most needed, and from a logistical standpoint the most effective form of aid given the current situation.”
