Entry/Exit System for non-EU citizens to come into force on 10th November

Entry/Exit System for non-EU citizens to come into force on 10th November

The EU entry/exit system (EES) should be launched on November 10, as announced by the European Union Mission in Serbia.

The system’s launch has been postponed several times, will come into force at the border crossings of the EU member states, from November 10, 2024, and passengers entering the territory of the EU will have to register with the system.

The EU Mission adds that the announced implementation of the Entry/Exit system is an obligation for the border authorities of the EU Member States and that the implementation is not within their competence.

It is important for citizens to know that this system is different from the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which will come into force at a later date and will require passengers to fill out a short form. That is, the EES system is due to enter into force in about a month, followed by the next step, the ETIAS system, which will be revived next year, and which refers to obtaining authorization to enter 30 European countries for people from 60 countries, whose citizens do not need a visa to enter the EU.

What is EES and ETIAS and how will the application work?

Aleksandar Senicic, director of the National Association of Travel Agencies of Serbia (YUTA), says that travel agencies are informed that the implementation of the EES system will begin soon.

“Travel agencies have been informed, but we don’t have answers to many questions from the EU yet. I’m waiting for the app to come out in October. It was said that it will appear in the second half of October in order to see through the application whether the information we have is credible,” says Senicic.

According to him, the second ETIAS system is due to start in May 2025 and is different in that the passenger only registers for the first time, pays a fee of 7 euros and is no longer obliged to register for the next three years.

“With the first EES system, we have to register every time we go to the EU, that is, we will have to apply by May until ETIAS starts. If we travel three times, we will have to apply three times, but there is no charge,” says Seničić.
