The Council of Europe announced that it is severing relations with Belarus due to “that country’s active participation” in Russian aggression in Ukraine.
The executive body of the Council of Europe, the Committee of Ministers, “decided today to suspend all relations with Belarus. The Committee of Ministers suspends the right of Belarus to participate in all meetings and activities of the organization,” the statement said. Council of Europe.
The Committee of Ministers is suspending all technical cooperation with Belarus, but has decided to maintain and strengthen ties with Belarusian civil society and the opposition in exile, the Council of Europe said, adding that other initiatives in this direction will be undertaken soon.
Belarus is not a full member of the Council of Europe because it has not signed the European Convention on Human Rights.
The country cooperated with the organization as a signatory to 12 conventions initiated by the Council of Europe, especially the Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, the European Cultural Convention and the Convention on the Conservation of Wild Animals in Europe.
Belarus is also a member of four partial agreements that do not have the status of international agreements, but provide some form of cooperation on certain topics.
Minsk has also participated in the work of the Group of States against Corruption and the Venice Commission, an advisory group that provides legal opinions of states on draft laws or laws already in force.
The Council of Europe’s decision on Belarus comes a day after Russia’s expulsion from membership in that organization. Russia’s participation in the Council of Europe’s main bodies was first suspended on February 25, a day after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. /Telegraph/
